Open to all

This beautiful church, designed by the eminent Gothic revivalist architect James Brooks, is a warm, friendly place where all are welcomed and everybody's individuality is valued. It is a close-knit but outward-looking community, seeking to grow and to play an increasingly supportive and active role in the lives of local people. Charlton welcomes local residents and visitors for events, social contact, support, refreshments and quiet reflection. In more detail...

Our services cater for all age groups. As well as services four times a week, including monthly Bubble Church, there are regular social events and concerts open to the wider community.  Members of the church work voluntarily with the Dover Street Pastors and to run the Curzon Community Hall in Tower Hamlets. Charlton is a popular church for baptisms, and offers a large and dignified venue for weddings and funerals.

Charlton seeks to serve and connect with the people of Dover through these activities and through regular events like the Christmas Fayre, Summer Fair, strawberry teas, concerts, American suppers and Bingo. These are well-supported and show that Charlton has a role to play and a place in the hearts of local people. It is used by numerous schools for Christmas services, including the Dover Grammar School for Girls nearby, and has a close working relationship with Charlton Church of England Primary School. Charlton is also a regular venue for the education section of Deal Music and Arts and The Big Reveal, hosting musical expereriences for children.

We are fortunate indeed in the facilities at Charlton. The church is easily transformed into a large space for tables and is available to hire for events and as a recording venue (with its beautiful acoustic and quiet settting, it is ideal for music recording).  The lovely, surprisingly lofty Victorian building, designed by the eminent James Brooks, is spacious enough to accommodate an orchestra and chorus, as well as the sizeable audience that supports the Dover Prom and the hoards of school-children who attend daytime concerts. The church has a prize-winning 19th century Bevington pipe organ, an electronic organ, a Clavinova keyboard and an excellent baby grand piano. Music is playing an ever-increasing role in Charlton's life.

The Church Hall nextdoor is available to hire separately: it has plenty of tables and chairs, a projector screen with sound, a convenient fitted kitchen with dishwasher and a stage. There are Ladies, Gents and Disabled toilets with a baby-changing facility. Having a wooden floor, it is suitable for dance and exercise classes and has an acoustic appropriate for musical rehearsal.

Many people do not realise that the church is funded ALMOST ENTIRELY through gifts and the proceeds from events: recent increases in overheads are a challenge. Please help us to keep Charlton Church open at the heart of the community by attending our events and donating generously.

Parking is available on St Alphege Road and also in the Morrisons car park nearby (three hours free of charge).
